Marketing vs. reality
Fish oil gummy marketing claims, decoded

Quick answer
Most front-of-pack numbers describe fish oil weight, “total omega-3” including plant ALA, or nothing verifiable. The only reliable number is EPA + DHA per serving on the Supplement Facts panel. Be most skeptical of “triple strength”, “1500 mg/2000 mg” gummies, “omega 3-6-7-9” blends, and anything that adds red yeast rice.
Big numbers
“Triple strength” / “Extra strength”
There's no regulated meaning. On gummies it usually compares against the brand's own weaker product, or against nothing at all. One long-running Amazon best-seller sold as “Triple Strength Omega 3 Fish Oil Gummies” lists its fish oil powder as providing 13.2 mg DHA and 2.8 mg EPA, less than a single Nature Made gummy.
“1500 mg” / “2000 mg” gummies
A standard gummy weighs about 2–4 grams in total, and most of that is sugar or sugar alcohol, water and gelling agent. The best emulsified chews on the market manage 525 mg of EPA + DHA. A gummy claiming 1,500 mg or more of omega-3 per serving should be treated as unverified until you see a Supplement Facts panel and, ideally, a third-party certificate of analysis. Often the big number is total oil weight, or the serving is several gummies.
“Fish oil 400 mg”
Fish oil weight, not omega-3. Nature Made's “Fish Oil 400 mg” gummies deliver 57 mg of EPA + DHA per serving.
“100 mg omega-3” (with flaxseed)
If the label lists ALA or flaxseed/chia oil, part of the headline is plant ALA. Your body converts less than 15% of ALA into EPA and DHA. vitafusion's 100 mg splits into 50 mg EPA + DHA and 50 mg ALA.
Blends and add-ins
“Omega 3-6-7-9”
Omega-6 (linoleic acid) and omega-9 (oleic acid) are abundant in any normal diet, so there's no need to supplement them. Popular 3-6-7-9 gummies such as MaryRuth's contain no EPA or DHA at all; their omega-3 is about 55 mg of flax ALA.
Red yeast rice, CoQ10, bergamot
Several high-ranking Amazon gummies add red yeast rice. Red yeast rice can contain monacolin K, which is chemically identical to the cholesterol drug lovastatin, and some products have been contaminated with citrinin, a toxin that can damage the kidneys. The amount varies from product to product and is usually not disclosed. Don't combine it with a statin, and talk to your clinician before taking it.
Krill oil gummies
Krill oil is naturally low in EPA + DHA per gram compared with fish oil concentrates. A “2000 mg krill oil” claim tells you nothing about EPA + DHA. Check the panel.
Quality words
| Claim | What it means | Worth anything? |
|---|---|---|
| “High absorption” / “superior absorption” | Unregulated. Meaningful only if the oil form (triglyceride / rTG) or emulsification is disclosed | Only with specifics |
| “Burpless” | Often true for classic gummies because they hold so little oil | Mildly |
| “#1 pharmacist recommended” | From a brand-recognition survey, not a potency or quality ranking | No |
| “#1 fish oil brand” | Sales data | No |
| “Wild-caught” | Most fish oil is from wild anchovy/sardine anyway | Barely |
| “Molecularly distilled” / “purified” | Standard processing that removes contaminants | Expected baseline |
| USP Verified / IFOS certified | Independent testing of potency, contaminants and manufacturing | Yes |
| Friend of the Sea / MSC | Sustainability of the fishery | Yes, for sustainability (not purity) |
| “Supports heart, brain & joint health” | A structure/function claim; FDA doesn't review these | No |
One rule that beats all of this
Find EPA and DHA on the back, add them, divide by the serving size. Or skip the math and use our comparison table.
