How to stop fish oil burps (and whether gummies help)

Updated · Published · 4 min read · Sources linked below

Quick answer

Fish burps happen when oil floats on top of your stomach contents and repeats. Fixes: take fish oil with a meal, split the dose, choose fresher (less oxidized) oil, try emulsified gummy chews, or keep softgels in the freezer. Classic gummies rarely cause burps, largely because they contain very little oil.

Why it happens

Oil is lighter than water. A softgel that opens in an empty stomach leaves a slick of oil that can come back up with normal burping, and oxidized oil tastes and smells worse. Emulsified oil (as in gummy chews) disperses into tiny droplets instead.

Seven fixes that work

  1. Take it with your largest meal, which also improves absorption.
  2. Split the dose between two meals.
  3. Store softgels in the freezer so they dissolve further down the gut.
  4. Buy fresh oil from brands that publish oxidation testing; toss anything that smells sharp or rancid.
  5. Try triglyceride-form or emulsified products.
  6. Switch to a high-dose zero-sugar chew such as NOW Omega-3 Gummy Chews.
  7. Don't lie down right after taking it.
